Exterior Waterproofing Procedures:
- Waterproofing your basement from the exterior is highly recommended because you are stopping the water for entering the basement through the foundation, and keeping it outside your foundation where it belongs. You are preserving the structural integrity of your foundation.
- Waterproofing your home from the exterior it allows you to restore the foundation to its natural state and allows you to gain the greatest amount of drainage around your property by installing new weeping tile.
- Exterior waterproofing is a system that requires excavation around the perimeter of the building’s foundation. The excavation depth depends on the elevation of your property so therefore most excavations range from 5 to 8 feet deep and aprox 2 ½ ft wide. Deeper foundations than 8 feet will require additional shoring and the excavation to be stepped back to greater widths to prevent cave-ins.
- Once the hole has been excavated, shoring is installed to ensure the safety of the crew and to prevent any soil from breaking free and caving in the area dug.
- Excavation is to the bottom of the footing level where the old weeping tiles are removed and new continuous 4-inch weeping tiles with filter cloth are installed.
- Foundation walls are then cleaned and inspected for any voids or cracks, the defective areas are chiselled out and repaired with a expandable hydraulic cement. Some foundations are poured concrete, cement block, brick or stone/rubble. If the surface is to rough or does not have a smooth surface for a membrane to bond to, we apply cement parking.
- We then apply a rubber Bituthene primer which is the activator for the rubber Bituthene membrane. The rubber membrane is applied to three-foot wide sheets, with a min. 6” overlap. It will not dry up and crack, like a typical trowel on a membrane. The rubber membrane has enough flexibility to allow the product to expand and contract if any further settlement occurs in your foundation.
- Then we apply a dimpled sheet of drainage membrane (Delta MS) which is fastened to the top with a termination bar, this membrane creates a void between the rubber membrane and the soils to be backfilled.
- Once the waterproofing and membrane have been installed a layer of ¾ clear gravel is placed over the weeping tile to allow better drainage to into the weeping tiles.
- If your house has any windows installed below grade you will require a window well A window well can be custom-made from pressure-treated wood or a pre-cast stainless steel well can be installed. A 4-inch vertical drain and weeping tile is installed to the footings. The window well is filled with ¾ clear stone in allow water to drain directly into the weeping tile system.
- Then the area is backfilled with its native soil and compacted in 12” lifts to its original level. The soil is graded away from the property to allow water to run off.
Once completed, you are provided with a receipt and fully transferable Life Time Warranty certificate.
